Welcome to Year 2 and Owl Class!
Welcome to Owl class!
Owl class have worked super hard this half term and learnt so much about the Great Fire of London. All the children have shown a keen interest in the topic and have produced some great pieces of work… especially when writing. A big well done to each and every one of you!
After the holidays our new topic will be ‘Australia’. This will have a geography focus where the children will learn about Australia both as a country and a continent. We will make comparisons to life in the UK, looking specifically at the weather and climate, and how the seasons differ in the Southern Hemisphere.
The children will learn about Australian traditions and cultures, which will be a theme throughout all of the foundation subjects. For example we will look at aboriginal art, creating a number of different pieces in this style, and we will explore the ‘didgeridoo’ in music. In science the children will learn about habitats, life cycles and food chains. They will also learn about micro-habitats when going on a mini-beast hunt.
In English the children will be learning about Dreamtime Narrative, specifically looking at origin stories linked to native animals. They will also produce fact-file writing and create an information leaflet. In Maths the children will start by learning about arrays, learning how counting in 2s, 5s and 10s can help solve multiplications. They will also learn about the term ‘division’, understanding how to share amounts equally. We will look at the relationships between multiplication and division number facts. For example if we know 3 x 5 = 15 we also know 15 ÷ 5 = 3.
The adults in Owl class believe that communication is the key to success. If you have any worries or information that you would like to share with us, then please do one of the following:
- speak to one of us at the classroom door
- email or phone the school office
- write us a message in your child's reading diary (please ask your child to hand this directly to an adult to ensure the message does not get missed)
We hope you have a fantastic Christmas holiday and are looking forward to getting started again once everyone is well rested!
