Welcome to Year 2 and Kingfisher Class!
What a brilliant start to Year 2! The children have produced some wonderful pieces of work and put a huge amount of effort into their learning. It has been lovely to display their work both in the windows and in the classroom. Each and every one of you should be very proud.
After half-term we will be starting our new topic 'Fire, Fire!' where the children will learn about the Great Fire of London. Our topic will have a history focus, where we will use a range of sources to delve deep into the facts about this historic event. The children will also have the opportunity to form their own opinion on why the fire burnt so quickly.
Our key texts in English will look at two different fictional characters, and their experiences of the Great Fire of London. The children will look at the features of diary writing, writing their own diary entry about the events of our in school 'Great Fire of Tweseldown'. They will then write a narrative describing the events from the perspective of an eyewitness.
In Maths we will be having a big focus on addition and subtraction. First, we will learn about mental strategies for both calculations, then we will move onto more formal written methods. The children will learn how to create 'jumps' on a number line; forwards for addition and backwards for subtraction. Finally, the children will apply their knowledge to problem-solving.
If you or your child has any questions during Year 2 please speak to us on the classroom door, email/phone the office or write a message in your child's reading diary and ask them to hand it to us.
Have a lovely, relaxing half-term break, and we are looking forward to exploring our next topic with you!
