Tweseldown Infant School

Welcome to Year 2 and Kingfisher Class!

We are very excited for you to join us in Year 2 (as the biggest children in the school) and we hope you had a fantastic summer break! The teacher in Kingfisher class will be Miss Toms and the learning support assistant will be Mrs Price.

Our topic for the first term is a brand-new topic called 'On Tour!' Within this topic we will be learning lots of interesting facts about the four countries in the United Kingdom. Can you remember what they are? We will cover a range of geography skills such as fieldwork, observation and map work, as well as looking at our local area.

In art, we will be looking at a range of sculptures which can be found in the different UK countries, leading towards designing and creating a sculpture of our very own using clay. In DT, we will explore a range of mechanisms using wheels and axles to design, make and evaluate a moving vehicle...think funky camper vans!

Our key text in English will be 'Katie Morag's Island Stories'. We will learn about the fictional 'Isle of Struay' and read some stories in the series, finding out about the adventures Katie gets up to. Our first extended piece of writing will be a short narrative, where the children write their own adventure story with the purpose of entertaining their parents. We will then work on creating a leaflet to persuade people to come and visit the Island.

In Maths the children will start by deepening their place value knowledge. We will learn how to read and write numbers 1 to 100 and how to compare these using the greater than > and less than < symbols. The children will complete lots of practical work, focusing on their understanding of tens and ones e.g., 74 = 7 tens and 4 ones. The children will learn how to estimate numbers, including their careful positioning on a number line. We will then finish the term looking at addition and subtraction, learning how to add three numbers together. Throughout all of their Maths learning the children will be completing problem-solving.

Please check out the curriculum overview if you would like further detail on what your child will be learning throughout the autumn term.

If you or your child has any questions before they join Year 2 or once we are together as a class please speak to us on the classroom door, email or phone the office or write a message in your child's reading diary and ask them to hand it to us.

We hope you are just as excited as we are for you to join us in Year 2 and start the fun, games and lots of learning!
