Reading at Our School 

At our school, we are passionate about helping every child become a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader. We use Bug Club Phonics, a systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme, to teach children the essential skills needed to read and write successfully.

Through daily phonics lessons, children learn how letters and groups of letters represent sounds and how these sounds can be blended together to read words. As their knowledge grows, they develop increasing confidence in decoding unfamiliar words, reading with fluency and understanding what they have read.

Bug Club Phonics provides engaging, interactive and carefully matched reading books that align with the phonics sounds children are learning in school. This allows children to practise and apply their phonics knowledge successfully, developing both accuracy and confidence. Children are encouraged to read regularly both at school and at home, helping them to establish positive reading habits and a lifelong love of books. 

We expose children to a rich range of high-quality texts through story times, guided reading, nursery rhymes (in year R) and our wider curriculum. This helps to develop vocabulary, comprehension skills and a deeper enjoyment of reading.

We value the important role that parents play in supporting reading at home. By sharing books regularly and celebrating reading achievements, we can work together to give every child the best possible start on their reading journey.
