Part A: Curriculum music

Music is a powerful and inclusive way to inspire, engage and motivate all children, regardless of their starting point. At Tweseldown, we believe that music should be creative, enjoyable and accessible to everyone. Our aim is to nurture a love of music from the very beginning of each child's musical journey, while helping them to develop confidence, self-expression and a sense of achievement. Through our music scheme, Sing Up, children are given opportunities to listen to, compose, perform and appraise music, as well as develop an understanding and appreciation of a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Music learning is closely linked to our school values of SHINE.

Through music, children learn to share and collaborate with others, develop independence, embrace new experiences and enjoy their learning. These principles underpin our music curriculum and support our wider aim of enabling every child to flourish both musically and personally.

Through our Sing Up Music Curriculum, we are committed to ensuring that every child benefits from high-quality, hands-on and inspiring musical opportunities. The scheme supports us in delivering a range of diverse musical experiences and children learn to explore sound, rhythm, and pattern; experiment with instruments and their voice; express themselves through movement and singing; and begin to make musical choices of their own. In lessons, we aim to develop children’s musical vocabulary and encourage them to use it correctly. We strive to nurture each child's confidence, musical skills, knowledge and understanding, fostering a lasting appreciation and enjoyment of music. At the same time, we aim to provide a strong foundation that supports those who choose to pursue their musical learning and development further. The Sing Up curriculum is designed and written by subject specialists and the units represent a complete progressive library of resources that meet the requirements of the National Curriculum for Music, the suggested approaches of the Model Music Curriculum as well as the Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage. Sing Up draws on a broad range of musical traditions, using authentic songs and materials. We are proud to be a Platinum Sing Up School. By the end of KS1, our aim is for children to: · Enjoy making, listening to, and responding to music with enthusiasm and confidence. · Develop foundational musical skills such as keeping a steady pulse, recognising simple rhythms, exploring dynamics and tempo, and singing with increasing accuracy. · Appraise music using simple musical vocabulary and express personal preferences. · Create their own musical ideas through improvisation and simple composition. · Work collaboratively and respectfully in musical activities. · Feel proud of their musical achievements and recognise music as a valuable form of expression and communication.

Part B: Co-curricular music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

At Twesledown, the children have the opportunity to enjoy musical learning outside our music curriculum: · Rock Steady – a provider of in-school band lessons. There are bursary places given to a child on the FSM register during the year. · Choir – A lunchtime club run by the music leader for two terms during the school year. Key Stage One pupils can join this club. · Recorder Club – This is open to Year 2 pupils for two terms during the school year.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

Each week, Key Stage One pupils have a singing assembly led by a teacher. The songs are planned and link to the time of year and celebrations. Children in the choir perform at Bourley Grange Care Home at Christmas. Children in the choir perform at Fleet Festivities on the main stage to the local community. This performance is free for audiences to attend. Children perform songs as part of their Christmas performances to parents/carers. Participated in Sing from the Hart with other schools in the local community. Year 2 children perform a leavers performance for the school and parents at the end of Year 2.

In the future

· Develop further opportunities for musicians to come into school to perform for the children, · Develop further opportunities for children to perform in school.

· To develop further links with our local feeder Junior and Secondary Schools. For KS2 pupils to come and perform and share their learning from Listen to Me concerts. For all schools to share performances from peripatetic lessons, so children are inspired for when they move on. For children to see performances from the other schools when shows are performed.
